Over at Amazon, they kicked off Black Friday 2019 with a bunch of Dewalt cordless power tool deals of the day, and a couple of other deals too.

Some of these are really good promos. A Dewalt 20V Max brushless sander and cordless router bare tool bundle for $199? That seems very hard to beat.

The 20V Max compact brushless hammer drill and impact driver combo kit also look to be good buys.

Others are okay, but not “hot.” For example, there’s a deal where you get (2) 4.0Ah batteries and a 2.0Ah battery for $149, although I believe I saw a 4-pack of other Dewalt batteries for not much more.

It can be argued that the kit is the better deal at just $30 more, but as mentioned there are reasons why you might want to go with this option. The 12Ah battery is physically larger and heavier, although it will deliver considerably more runtime.

The choice is yours, but it’s a decision you will probably want to make quickly. Given that the bare tool is priced at $249, the $249 bare tool with free 8.0Ah battery promo and $280 12.0Ah kit promo especially might not last very long if they sell quickly.

Over at Acme Tools, their Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend deals are still going strong. I took a fresh look to see if there were any especially good deals I missed, and this Dewalt 20V Max LED worklight and battery bundle caught my attention as a really good deal!

This special bundle, DCL043DCL050, comes with Dewalt LED worklights, plus (2) 2.0Ah batteries.

Value Discussion

• DCL043: $68-$79 via Amazon
• DCL050: $49 via Amazon, $39 via Tool Nut
• 2x 2.0Ah Batteries: $74 for a 2-pack via Amazon

The lowest I could source the two LED worklights for is ~$79 for the DCL043 and $39 for the DCL050 via authorized sellers. A 3rd party seller on Amazon has the DCL043 for a little less. Going by these figures, the two LED worklights would be ~$107 to $118 combined. The batteries are another $74 to $79 on top of that.

Right now, Acme’s price is $139, but the bundle looks to be eligible for Dewalt’s $25 off $100+ promo, dropping the price to $114.

Here’s how I’m choosing to see this deal. I really like the Dewalt DCL043 spotlight, despite early reservations. That worklight/spotlight is $79. Batteries are $74. So this deal is $114 for batteries I could use with other Dewalt 20V Max cordless power tools, an LED worklight, and the DCL050 which might still be useful, I’d consider that a bonus.

Personally, I’d buy the DCL043, which is the brighter pivoting head spotlight. The DCL050? I’d use it, but I don’t know if I’d pay for one, given my particular needs and the other area worklights I have available. That’s why I’d consider it a bonus.

So to me, I’d be getting a great deal on the spotlight and battery 2-pack, and a bonus handheld area light. And that’s still a great deal. Now if you want both LED worklights, the spotlight for longer distance illumination and the area light for closer area illumination, this is an even better deal.

I’d like to see more deals like this. I recognize it’s pretty much aimed at existing Dewalt users, but that’s not a bad thing. There are a lot of deals aimed at getting users into a cordless power tool system, and not enough bare tool and tool plus battery bundles for those already invested in a particular system.

I have good news, and I have bad news. First, the good news – Ryobi’s 18V radio controlled truck is back in stock at Home Depot for the 2019 holiday shopping season!

This truck was a Home Depot Black Friday special two years ago. I bought one at the time and have run it a couple of times. Ryobi customer service helped with a repair when a part broke and part of an axle was lost in the grass.

Now here’s the bad news. I paid $59 for my Ryobi 18V truck and starter kit two years ago. Now, it’s $79 for just the truck.

It’s still a pretty good RC truck for the money, and it works well with Ryobi’s compact Li-ion batteries.

I’m writing about this now because 1) a lot of people have been asking about where they could buy one of these Ryobi-powered RC trucks, and 2) maybe its sudden holiday season emergence is a sign we’ll see a deal bundle or similar soon.

For just the truck, I’m tempted to buy one at $79, but I’d really like to see a kit at this price again, including a basic compact charger and low capacity One+ battery. I guess we’ll see.

Here are some specs:

• 1:10 scale
• 150 ft control distance
• Speeds up to 20 MPH
• Variable speed throttle control
• Transmitter requires 2x AAA batteries
• 2 wheel drive

The truck does get hot if you run it for a while.

The controls are easy, accessing the battery compartment is easy, and trim control allowed for easy adjustment.

I don’t regret my purchase one bit. At $79, I’m thinking of buying another one. At $59, I’d buy another one in a heartbeat, with or without charger and battery starter kit.

The deal they had in 2017 was that you get the free truck with the starter kit purchase, but that was a different SKU – P3800KN vs. P3800N for this truck-only kit.

It can be easy to fixate on past deals. I’m hoping we see another deal like the 2017 promo, but I’m not sure we will. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, and if enough time passes without a better promo, I just might buy the truck-only set anyway. It has been a great “starter” RC truck for me and the kids. Well, mostly me.

Okay, so as far as “household tool sets” go, how’d you rate this one?

If you ask me, it has a decent selection of must-have tools. Add in a multi-bit screwdriver, a mini bit screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and maybe a 2pc pliers set, and you’ve got a great start.

Price-wise, $199 isn’t good, I know I can build a better selection of tools for less. But, let’s wait and see what the holiday season or Black Friday price will be. With a $199 starting point, maybe it’ll be on sale for $149?

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being “you’ve given me nothing!” and 5 being “a perfect start for the absolute beginner,” I’d rank this a solid 3.5. It packs in some must-haves, and gives you the freedom to pick your own screwdriver, adjustable wrench, and full-size pliers.

It doesn’t look to come with a tool box though. That’s a small bummer. Budget in some money for a VersaStack, tool box.

So, your thoughts on this “household tool set?”

With these two kits you get a Craftsman drill and a better selection of hand tools. You’ll need drill and screwdriver bit starter sets as well, but special buys can be found at any home center this time of year for ~$10 each.

This combo sets you back ~$101, which isn’t too far off from the now-$99 kit discussed above, but you’ll need to factor in another $20-25 for drill and driver sets. Or buy what you need a la carte, but that’s not the best approach.

Over at Amazon, they have Dewalt 20V Max 5.0Ah battery 2-packs on sale for $124.99, AND eligible for $25 off $100+ discount at checkout, dropping the price to a penny under $100.

The battery 2-pack is usually $159, and I thought last month’s deal was decent when it dropped down to $123.

Last year Amazon had a Black Friday deal where they dropped the price of a 5.0Ah battery 2-pack and charger bundle to $104. I haven’t seen any kind of deal bundle like that this year yet. But, I’m not going to skip mentioning this current deal. $100 for tw0 Dewalt 5.0Ah batteries is an extremely good deal.

At the time of this posting, Amazon says the batteries will be in stock December 12th, 2019, which is just one week from now.

Ridgid has come out with a new 18V cordless impact driver “special buy” kit for Black Friday 2019 and the upcoming holiday shopping season.

I was really impressed with Ridgid’s brushless drill/driver deal last year, and I think the new impact driver deal might be worthy of the same sentiments.

To start off, this Ridgid R86038SB4 kit is priced at $99, which isn’t all that unusual for impact driver kits this time of year.

Update 12/6/19: The price is now $79 for the kit!

However, it has a couple of stand-out features and specs.

But first, this is where you would find it at your local Home Depot. Or, you can order it online via the link below.

Take a look at this quick photo I took of the box. 2,250 in-lbs. Brushless. 3-speeds.

This is an 18V brushless 3-speed impact driver with a max torque rating of 2,250 in-lbs. I don’t think I have ever seen a multi-speed brushless impact driver at this price point yet.

Last year’s cordless drill special buy was exceptionally powerful for its price-point, and the same looks to be true here.

You’re not going to get a more powerful impact driver kit at this point, nor are you going to get multiple speeds on an 18V-class tool at this level either. Multiple speed and torque settings are typically reserved for more premium models.

If you’re looking for an impact driver kit – and just an impact driver kit, this is looking to be the best option to go with this year.

If you’re looking to buy into a cordless power tool system, or to upgrade from an older brushed model to brushless, there are a great deal of choices. We’ll talk about some of those other brands’ tools and holiday deals soon.

There are of course some minor compromises. It looks like you get a different (slower?) charger than you might usually see bundled with Ridgid’s other 18V brushless cordless power tool kits. It also looks like you don’t get a belt hook. But, you get their high-spec’ed and well-featured impact driver and what looks to be a regular main-line 2.0Ah Li-ion battery.

This looks to be best value of all the $99 impact driver kits I’ve seen so far this year.

What do you think – Go Ridgid?

I don’t know if I would necessarily buy this to get into Ridgid’s 18V cordless power tool system, but then again they do have some very good tools, including a number of options other brands’ cannot yet match.

This Dewalt 20V Max brushless drill and impact driver combo kit, DCK283D2, is a personal favorite, and it’s on sale right now.

It comes with the Dewalt DWS791 compact brushless drill, and DCF887 3-speed impact driver, (2) 2.0Ah batteries, charger, and a tool bag.

When I ran a giveaway ~2-1/2 years ago, this kit cost me $260 plus tax. Its normal price seems to be $249 these days.

Right now, it’s on sale for $199.

To be clear, these are Dewalt’s premium compact brushless power tools, not the holiday season special-buys that have less torque, slower speeds, and are bundled with low capacity batteries.

There’s another version of the kit, DCK287D2, which comes with Dewalt’s compact brushless hammer drill, DCD796, and that kit is also $199 right now. That kit is an even better value since it’s normally priced a bit higher. Retailers are saying its “was” price is $319, and I remember seeing it at that price recently, but I believe its normal price is around $299.

$199 for the brushless drill and impact driver combo kit is really good, but it’s an even better price for the hammer drill and impact driver combo kit (if you prefer the hammer drill/driver).

If you don’t plan to do any drilling into masonry materials, the non-hammer drill/driver might be better. But if you don’t mind the slightly longer size, the hammer drilling functionality might be welcome, just in case. With the two kits being the same price, you’re not paying any more for the hammer drill/driver over the over one.

On my weekly trip to Costco, I noticed that they had put up their holiday tool display. That means it’s once again time to pick the most notable deals.

All the same caveats apply from previous years:

Presto Parabolic IR Heater

I’ve written many a post next to my Presto parabolic IR heater. It can definitely throw the heat. I’ll turn it on to medium, get into writing a post, and I’ll find 15 minutes later that I’m sweating.

The IR heater is 1000W and heats objects in the path of the parabolic reflector, not the air. It always comes out in the winter priced at $70, I don’t think I’ve ever seen discounted.

I’m a fan of Metabo HPT 18V cordless power tools, especially their brushless triple hammer impact driver, although I haven’t tried the tools featured in these holiday 2019 special buys.

There was a better deal on a similar Metabo HPT 18V brushless drill kit when the blacked-out kit was released at its pre-season price of $159, but that pricing is long-gone.

These kits would be better deals if they included higher capacity batteries, such as a compact 3.0Ah battery, but $99 is a tough price point to reach without compromises.

Both kits come with a charger and 1.5Ah battery.
